United Nations hosted in partnership with Human Rights Watch, Online

Join a capacity building session on engagement with the UN international human rights mechanisms. By Just Fair and Human Rights Watch.

Would you like to learn more about how to raise human rights concerns with international human rights mechanisms, in particular Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council, UN Treaty Bodies, and the Universal Periodic Review? Are you confused by the difference between the UN Human Rights Committee and the UN Human Rights Council?

Whether you’ve been using and engaging with international human rights mechanisms regularly in your policy and advocacy work, or you’d like to learn if it could strengthen the work that you’ve already been doing, this online capacity-building session is for you.

Hosted in partnership with Human Rights Watch, speakers will include a staff member from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights who covers the UK.

This session is aimed at civil society across the UK. No prior knowledge of the issue is required. The session will be recorded and made available to registered participants after the event.

The session will explore how civil society can engage with these international human rights mechanisms and follow up on their recommendations. Bodies covered in the session include:

  • Special Procedures (including Special Rapporteurs, Independent Experts and Working Groups)
  • Treaty bodies (like the Human Rights Committee, the Committee on Economic Social and Cultural Rights, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child)
  • The Universal Periodic Review and the Human Rights Council.

The session will be delivered by a staff member from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights who covers the UK, and it will provide an excellent opportunity to engage with them in addition to learning more about how you can better engage with relevant international human rights mechanisms in your own work to advance human rights at the national level in the UK.

The session will be moderated by Human Rights Watch, a member of the UK ESCR Network Steering Group. It is aimed at civil society across the UK. No prior knowledge of the issue is required. The session will be recorded and made available to registered participants after the event.
